Patient Family Education

Patient education is an individualized, systematic, structured process to assess and impart knowledge or develop a skill in order to effect a change in behavior. The goal is to increase comprehension and participation in the self-management of health care needs. The patient/family/significant others play an active part in the process. Patient education is an important component of care in both Inpatient and Outpatients.
The assessment of the patient’s needs, readiness, and ability to learn will take into account their literacy and educational level, cultural considerations, emotional barriers and motivators, physical or cognitive limitations, and the financial impact of all patient care decisions.
Patients and their families are provided specific knowledge and skills to cope with all their health care needs. These instructions include but are not limited to:
- Taking medication in a safe and effective manner.
- Explanation of safe and effective use of medical equipment, if any.
- Interaction of drugs.
- Dietary requirements and any potential interaction with medication, pain management and post procedure recovery technique
- Instruction and education will be in the primary language of the patient/family if possibl
- All consultations are carried out in either English or in Arabic, if possible.
- Teaching material such as pamphlets shall be given to the patients and their family or friends to support their education.
- All necessary medical staff should participate in the patient and family teaching.
- All inpatients and outpatients should be assessed and educated as required.
- All patients shall be evaluated to be sure they understand and can repeat the information provided.
- All patients are encouraged to ask questions about their condition and treatment.
