The ECT procedure is a safe, effective treatment used to treat service users with specific types of serious mental illness as described above. ECT is considered a serious medical treatment, for which appropriate consent to treatment issues must be adhered to, as described above.
Duties
Attending Doctor
ECT is administered by the ECT Lead Consultant Psychiatrist or by the Specialist working at the hospital. Appropriate training and supervision is provided for psychiatric doctors involved in the administration of ECT
The attending Doctors ensure that treatment rotes are made SAS Doctor ECT Rota aims to facilitate continuity of treatment. The Lead Consultant will also advise nursing staff on the suitability of referrals to the service.
Anesthetic Consultant
A named Lead Consultant Anesthetist is responsible for the administration of anesthesia for ECT. The Anesthetist assesses patients for anesthetic risk and will discuss in detail those clients who need further assessment or investigation with referring teams.
Nursing Staff
During treatment, there is a qualified nurse present in the treatment room and one in the recovery room. The qualified nurse should be known to the patient, be aware of the patient’s legal and consent status and have an understanding of the ECT process.
